The Supper of St Gregory the Great
Not many people living in Vicenza know that “The Supper of St Gregory the Great” (1572), masterpiece of Paolo Caliari known as Paolo Veronese, is hanging on the rear wall of the ancient refectory of the Church of Monte Berico. It’s a big oil painting on canvas measuring 8,78 x 4,44 meters. The painting—now restored—bears the signs of breakage. On June 10, 1848 the painting was cut into 32 pieces by Austrian soldiers, in the context of the Italian First War of Independence. On 2014—facing the original opera, in the opposite wall—the video artist from Vicenza Roberto Dal Bosco has projected his video tribute to this masterpiece, its shapes, and its story of hope and salvation. Dal Bosco has digitally reproduced the entire artwork at a very high resolution and recreated virtually the space of the painting. Then, using computer graphics to animate the work of art. His installation has also been on display for almost one year in Utah at “The Leonardo”, with 230.000 visitors. “The Supper of St Gregory the Great” can be seen every day with free access. Visiting hours are from 9 am to 12 pm and from 3 pm to 5 pm. Facing the Church of […] MoreTweet

Hotel Viest – The Best Pampering Day in Vicenza in 3 Simple Steps
You know what!? We all need a little TLC in our lives. So, today I want to share with you the perfect formula for the best pampering day in Vicenza, just like the one I had the chance to savour only a couple of days ago. It takes three simple steps – swim, relax and eat – and you will emerge on the other side wondering why all days can’t be just like this. Our base for the day will be Hotel Viest – a four-star establishment conveniently located on the border between Vicenza and Torri di Quartesolo. Hence it is within very easy reach, both by public transport and car. Yet it feels secluded and tranquil as if it were miles away from the hustle and bustle of daily routine. Most importantly, you don’t have to be a stay-in guest of Hotel Viest in order to use its swimming pool, Wellness Centre & Spa and its restaurant. You can just turn on the day and pay a daily rate or purchase one of the wellness packages on offer. SWIM Start the day by making a splash in the hotel’s swimming pool. It is big and refreshing with built-in […] MoreTweet
Brief history of the “Rua of Vicenza”
Year 1263, in Bolsena in Central Italy, a Bohemian priest (whom tradition calls Peter of Prague), saw a host bleed several drops of blood while he was saying mass, a miracle that put an end to his doubts about the transubstantiation of the bread and wine into the body and blood of Jesus Christ. A year later, to commemorate the event, Pope Urban IV established the feast of Corpus Domini, which is celebrated on the Thursday after the Octave of Pentecost, “making universal” a practice that he had already seen and admired in Flanders. Unfortunately, the Pope died that year and his successors did not promote the feast as actively, interrupting its observance for about forty years. This is why it is not mentioned in the Vicenza Statutes of 1264 but it appears in the Statutes of 1311, when it was decreed that “Every year there will be a solemn feast on that day to honor and venerate the Most Holy Sacrament with a solemn procession of all the clergy, the guilds and the arts, which must attend with their insignia, pallium and lit candles. The colleges of judges and notaries must also attend, with their multicolored hoods and a […] MoreTweet
Residence Cà Beregana – An Authentic Italian Experience in the Veneto’s Green Heart
The sun is shining high above the Northern Italian region of Veneto. It’s hot and all I have eyes for is the blue swimming pool sparkling right in front of me. “Come,” it says, “take a dip. The water is lovely!” And so too is the scenery. Right behind the pool stands a carefully restored early 17th century manor house – all high arches and a square turret. Its yellow bricks are emphasised by the green rolling hills which serve as a perfect backdrop. By the fence, the purple blooms of a huge wisteria swish in the gentle breeze and in the garden classical statues peek behind rose bushes which are about to bloom. I am at Residence Cà Beregana – a peaceful and quiet nest where you find yourself in the heart of the Italian countryside and yet are only 3 km (less than 2 miles) away from Vicenza’s centre with its Palladian buildings and centuries-deep history. You know what makes your Italian trip really special?! Finding the right place to return to at night after a hard day of sightseeing and eating your weight in delicious food. Of course, you will want a comfortable bed, a spacious room, some gorgeous views, and a great breakfast in the […] MoreTweet

Top 10 Castles to Visit Within an Hour of Vicenza
Castles can be some of the most fascinating places to visit. Because of their history, unique architectural structure, and often unusual furnishings, they make for a great visit whether you’re a history buff, a fairytale lover, or just someone who loves all things medieval. And let’s be honest, Europe has no shortage of castles or history. In fact, we are lucky to be living within a short distance of an abundance of castles, fortresses, and noble villas. I’ve put together a list of some pretty great castle recommendations amongst the provinces of Vicenza, Padova, Verona, and Treviso, just to name a few. This is by no means an exhaustive list because it would take months to visit all of the castles in those areas! But here is a list of places to start if you’re into castle exploring! These sites make for a great day trip, a romantic getaway, or a nearby place to take your friends and family when they come to visit! To provide a bit of historical context, “castle” comes from the Latin word “castellum,” meaning fortress. Castles were often used as homes or residences of nobles, and to protect territories or even whole cities. And it […] MoreTweet

How to Get from Vicenza to Venice, Murano & Burano
So, you’re thinking of heading to Venice for the day? You’ve got friends or family in town or maybe it’s your first time visiting! This is a great day trip, especially from Vicenza, and with the detailed information below, you’ll be well on your way to seeing the best parts of Venice, Murano, and Burano! Getting to Venice There are a couple different ways to get to Venice. You can drive and park in a parking garage, but be prepared to pay a hefty day-fee. Tronchetto is a well-known car park that charges 21€ and from there, you can take the people mover over to Venice for 3€ per person, round trip. Another option, if you are a military ID holder, is to take the free shuttle to the airport, and then take a water taxi from the airport to Venice. However, the best and most affordable option is via train. If you’ve never taken the train in Italy before, no worries! It can seem overwhelming at first, but I promise it’s pretty simple to figure out. If you’re looking for a specific time to leave the Vicenza Train Station (Stazione Fs Vicenza), the Trenitalia website or app is a good […] MoreTweet

The Mystery of Villa L. Da Porto in Montorso Vicentino
Called “the Montursium” in ancient times, the toponym derives either from “mount”, from its Roman name “Ursius”, or from the name of the noble Orso (belonging to the ancient family of Trissino), who had probably built the castle of Fratta hill – now the cemetery. This is, therefore, the origin of the name “Castrum Montis Ursi” from which the actual Montorso came. In this quaint little town, you will find the splendid Villa Da Porto-Barbaran. The construction of the Palladian style villa started in 1662 and finished in 1724. In its early days, it boasted a large collection of paintings, antique furniture, and a beautiful garden full of magnificent sculptures. Very little is left from the former grandeur. Near the villa you can still see a tower and colonnade that date back to the 16th century, when there stood another abode, that of Luigi Da Porto. Who is Luigi da Porto? Luigi da Porto (1485 – 1529) was an Italian soldier, poet, and a writer born in Vicenza. He was severely wounded in battle, forcing him to end his stint in the military and retire in Montorso Vicentino. Villa Da Porto in Montorso is where Luigi penned the love story […] MoreTweet

Mossano
Name origin The meaning of the name “Mossano” is still discussed. Some think the name has an erudite origin from the Latin mons sanus (healthy mountain), others believe it comes from the Latin personal name Mussius, yet both explanations lack substantial proofs. It is more likely that the origin of this name be some non-Latin word, like muzzus, that describes some characteristics of the local landscape. History The steep, cave-scattered, sun-exposed slopes provided ideal living areas for man since the Paleolithic Era. In Mossano traces of prehistoric living have been found in two caves: S. Bernardino’s and Paina Caves. Archaeological enquiries have been carried out in these two caves for more then 30 years by scholars of the renowned Paleontology Department of the Science Faculty of Ferrara University, first under the surveillance of Professor Pietro Leonardi, and lately under that of Professor Alberto Broglio. A hearth discovered in S. Bernardino’s cave had scholars to move back of 20.000 years the start fire-using by men, and the oldest examples of hearth-related industry has been named bernardinian, because of the ground-breaking discoveries made in this Berici Hills site. But there’s more then just prehistoric facts about S. Bernardino’s Cave: the cave was […] MoreTweet

Dental accidents. What should we do?
What should we do in case of a dental trauma? When you have young children, the falls that happen during any active type of play, or to kids who have just started walking, can sometimes lead to tooth injuries. When an accident occurs, don’t worry- most times a tooth that’s been knocked out can be completely saved if proper care is taken in the first 20 minutes. Reason why it is important to keep calm and know few notions on first aid, so that we are able to block bleeding until we reach the hospital or the pedodontist – the dentist specialized in children treatments. Read here the advice of the Centro Ortodontico Vicentino Orthodontic Center on what we should do. A Restaurant Guide to Costabissara
After living in Costabissara, Vicenza Italy for the past year, I know most of the restaurants in our town pretty well. I like to think that we have one of the best varieties of cuisine and I’m actually quite impressed with the diversity that our small community on the outskirts of downtown Vicenza has. We have everything from a Mexican restaurant to an American style street bar… on top of many fine Italian restaurants. Sometimes you just need a break from all the pasta, wine & bread (shock) and you want something that reminds you of home. Women Warriors Part 2
In the summer of 2018 I was with some friends from our group Vicenza Women of Color (VWOC) thinking about how 2018 was the year of the woman and how could we showcase that here in Vicenza. So we decided to have a photography exhibit in the city of Vicenza showcasing Women/Mothers/Soldiers, we called it Woman Warriors. All models and photographers were from the Vicenza Military Community (VMC). To see pics from our past event then click here. So as we are about to start Women’s History Month the VWOC and USAG Italy is pleased to present the Italian premiere of Women Warriors Part 2 Photographic Exhibition. Six new artists from the Vicenza Military Community have been selected to exhibit their photographs and they are Karina Cazares Cantu, Maria Di Bianca Cavins (Photo credit for picture above), Andrew Peck, Sarah Elizabeth Romero, Giuliana Gabriela Swenson and Isabel Wigger. Taking the theme of Women Warriors each artist celebrates what that means to them. They investigate themes of beauty, power, strength, and the duality of a Mother-Soldier role. They give voice to the everyday heros who keep their families together through daily challenges, while maintaining their focus to fulfill their military mission. From […] MoreTweet
